The Editorial

1997 saw an unusual haze dawning on Sarawak in September, creating insurmountable fears, but the Sarawakians remained resilient and brave. However, days with blue skies and nights with stars have come back to stay. This is a remarkable memory for 1997. But yet another historical and exceptional development is the setting up of the Society of Sarawakians Writing in English.

Twelve people gathered together at the end of November to moot the idea that it was time for such a society to be set up. It was a brave thing to do during such difficult times of recession and devaluation of our ringgit. It is our fervent belief that tomorrow’s history is today’s story. We must write that story right or our history will be wrong.

The Society had indeed rolled into work. Many meetings have been held enthusiastically. A workshop is on 13 - 14 December and James Richie has been invited to conduct one session. A trip to Long San has been organized from 17 to 30 December. A master plan of activities has been worked out for six months of 1998 and exciting writing days are indeed ahead of us.

The protem committee members under the energetic leadership of  Abby Lau deserve a big applause. Anyone interested in writing in English is most welcome to join us.

We hope this newsletter will constantly keep you informed of our activities.
